Background

Coastal properties across the country are under threat from a rising high water mark and coastal erosion. A CSIRO study has found that sea-levels are expected to rise by 40cm above 1990 levels BY 2050. Each centimetre rise will result in one metre of erosion on low lying beaches.

The predicted unprecedented rise in sea level and associated increasing storm activities is causing a collision between settled property law for tidal properties along the coast, much of which is held by either local councils or privately.

As the traditional high water mark is invaded by ocean and tidal waters an urgent re-examination of survey law and practice, the adequacy of existing compensation provisions, and council development control responsibilities is now needed.

This important half day forum looks at what the implications of this are for property professionals and is recommended for valuers, planners, surveyors and spatial professionals, property lawyers, councils and infrastructure agencies.
