The Guidelines for Describing Maritime Boundaries were developed to provide guidance to those people involved in describing and mapping maritime boundaries, providing:

  • policy makers and negotiators with a broad understanding of the spatial issues that need to be considered when defining maritime boundaries

  • spatial professionals with technical advice on how to describe and map maritime boundaries clearly and unambiguously.

The Guidelines are not intended to replace the need to seek appropriate legal advice when determining and describing maritime boundaries. Rather they attempt to establish best practice, increase clarity and certainty and reduce ambiguity thereby improving marine administration and minimising the potential for litigation by establishing legally defensible boundaries.
